As one can see in the picture above the "old" part of Staithes is located in a very limited area at the base of the cliff. There is not an inch of flat ground available for any form of expansion. Generally speaking most of the older buildings are in this area and as one moves back up the High Street to the top of the hill the buildings get more modern.

At the top of the hill at the junction of the High Street and the A174 one will find the more modern extension to Staithes including a Co-op Supermarket. The residents up here have the advantage that their mobile phones actually work too.
